| Contents Notes | The poster's central panel depicts the illuminated initial "INP" ("in principio") from the opening of the Gospel book of John, in the Book of Kells. Columns on outer left and right depict examples of Celtic interlace, knots, spirals and zoomorphic designs, plus six illustrations of episodes in the life of St. Patrick. The text box at the bottom outlines the production of illuminated manuscripts at the monastery at Kells in the 9th century, and describes the construction, symmetry and mathematical principles in the various Irish patterns. |
