Abstract |
A study was conducted between 1975-1977 on the populations of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and sauger (Stizostedion canadense) in the Tongue River Reservoir, in southeastern Montana. The Tongue River Reservoir is the recipient of mine water effluents from the Decker Mine, the largest surface coal mine in the western United States. The objective of the study was to determine possible impacts of the mine on the walleye and sauger populations in the reservoir, and to provide data against which future comparisons can be made. These species were chosen because they are two of the most important game fishes in the reservoir. The age and growth of 640 walleyes and 546 saugers were determined from collections made in gill nets, trap nets, and by electrofishing. |
