Abstract |
Many industrial wastewater streams contain hign concentrations of organic material which are often difficult to treat biologically because of their toxicity or refractory nature. Catalytic oxidation is a technique on which little data is available although at least one commercial catalytic oxidation process has been announced. In this work the catalytic oxidation of phenol in aqueous solution has been studied over supported copper oxide and manganese dioxide to provide both fundamental and practical design information on the process. The aqueous-phase phenol oxidation studies were carried out in batchwise mode at atmospheric pressure and 100C, and in an autoclave at temperatures from 96 to 200C and oxygen pressure of 1 to 17 atm. The economics of the system are discussed. |
