Abstract | In order to develop recommendations for monitoring low-level radioactive waste dumpsites in the abyss, the report attempts a synthesis of information from three overlapping topical areas. First, U.S. Regulations governing the dumping and monitoring of wastes in the ocean are interpreted in a deep-sea context. Second, significant attention is given to experiences obtained from past dumping of low-level radioactive wastes in marine environments, both shallow-water and deep-sea. Third, the report attempts to apply the monitoring 'Requirements' and conceptual approaches selected to the abyssal seafloor, based on present understandings of the deep-sea ecosystem. |
