Abstract
These guidelines are established to assist municipalities, States, and Federal agencies in developing requirements for the pretreatment of wastewaters which are discharged to publicly owned treatment works. The Guidelines also explain the relationship between pretreatment and the effluent limitations for a publicly owned treatment works. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published Pretreatment Standards in 40 CFR 128 (Appendix A). The standards will be enforceable by the EPA. These guidelines provide technical information useful to States and municipalities in establishing pretreatment requirements to supplement the Federal pretreatment standards. Authority for these guidelines is contained in Section 304(f) (1) of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972.
