Contents Notes
This report covers the safety aspects of lithium batteries from R and D through manufacture, handling, storage, transport, and operation to disposal. Lithium batteries have advantages over conventional batteries, such as high energy content and low temperature operation capability. The high chemical activity of lithium batteries, however, is the reason for potential hazards, such as explosions, fires, and release of toxic chemicals. Suggested methods to bring these hazards under control are discussed. Further, safety precautions to be taken by operating personnel and during the fabrication process are outlined.
