Abstract
The approach and methodology to evaluate the nitrogen status of lake sediments, with the ultimate aim of estimating their role as a nitrogen source or sink to the overlying waters, is outlined. The information is derived from five years of research effort on the forms, amounts and transformations of nitrogen in lake sediments. The suggested approach involves monitoring or comparative characterization, or both, of the forms of nitrogen in lake sediments, along with laboratory tests to assess the relative rates of various key nitrogen processes such as nitrification, denitrification, mineralization and immobilization.
