Abstract |
The guide is designed to introduce the land manager to water quality monitoring and to illustrate how monitoring results can be used to improve management decisions and practices. In a reader friendly format, the guide: (1) defines water quality monitoring, (2) identifies some of the benefits obtainable from monitoring and evaluation, and (3) outlines the monitoring process from plan conception through use of the final report. The guide promotes participation of the land manager in all steps of the monitoring process, and emphasizes the need to use the feedback loop process to follow-up on monitoring results. This is a companion document to the Environmental Protection Agency's publication entitled 'Monitoring Guidelines to Evaluate Effects of Forestry Activities on Streams in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska' (EPA/910/9-91-001). The latter provides guidance for developing and implementing monitoring projects to the land manager's technical staff. |
