Abstract
The report summarizes the technical status of EPA's Limestone Injection Multistage Burner (LIMB) program and discusses the planned program leading to commercialization by 1990. It provides a background on the emissions of SO2 and NOx from coal-fired utility boilers and discusses critical aspects of the LIMB process. It also provides an overview of the LIMB process and the program approach, followed by a detailed discussion of results and plans for each major technical area of the program. The goal of the LIMB program is to provide a low cost technology for control of SO2 and NOx for coal-fired boilers. In the U.S., the dominant source of SO2 is existing coal-fired utility boilers, which also contribute about 20% of the total NOx emissions. LIMB is one emerging technology which has the potential to accomplish this goal in a more cost effective manner than currently commercial technologies.
