Abstract
Kinetic models describing the relationships between algal biomass production and both incident irradiance and the concentration of nitrogen were developed and tested under controlled laboratory conditions. The applicability of these models to the prediction and evaluation of the performance of algal systems in waste treatment received special attention. Of three models developed, the macroscopic model based on the exponential relationship between irradiance and algal specific growth rate at the microscopic level proved to be the one most compatible with the experimental results under the conditions of a chemostatic algatron reactor.
