Abstract
A methodology is set forth to model and analyze rainfall and runoff events utilizing the basic concepts of probability theory to the general modeling problem. The procedure looks at an event such as thunderstorm rainfall in light of the number of occurrences in a given time period and the magnitude and spatial distribution of each event. A Poisson distribution was found to adequately describe the number of events per season and a geometric distribution for the depth of rainfall at a point per storm. These distributions were then combined to produce an extreme-value distribution for thunderstorm rainfall. (Author)
