Abstract
An attempt was made to determine the extent of pollution of waters and fish of Reelfoot Lake (Tenn.) by chlorinated pesticide residues and to determine whether residue accumulation in the tissues of lake-associated animals was a factor in their mortality. Except in winter, water samples from the highly eutrophic lake contained large amounts of organics and/or soil particulate matter which interfered with the analytical methods used. The presence of DDT and its derivatives was indicated in low concentrations in those water samples collected during winter months. All fish samples contained p,p'-DDT and its derivatives at levels ranging from 0.017-49.312 ppm. Aldrin and dieldrin also were found in the tissues of this channel catfish. Mortality of resident mallard ducks was not determined.
