Abstract
Seafood processing constitutes one of Alaska's major industries and is also one of the major waste sources in the coastal areas. Waste quantities from seafood processing range from 30-80% of the weight of raw product. In most cases, these wastes are discharged directly to adjacent receiving waters with little or no treatment. In recent years concern has risen over the possible adverse environmental effects from these operations. Concentrations of seafood processing activities such as that found at Kodiak have produced severe water quality degradation. The survey obtained information of seafood waste quantities and methods of waste disposal, and made visual observations of environmental effects resulting from waste disposal.
