Abstract
The report discusses research to provide more comprehensive knowledge about windrow composting as a solid waste management tool and permit better assessment of available information about this subject. Results of investigations and operational experiences obtained from the project during the period June 1967 to September 1969, are discussed. The project was located at Johnson City, Tennessee. During the period, an average of 34 tons of raw refuse per day was processed. Investigations of the potential hazard to health from pathogenic organisms in compost were conducted. Sewage sludge, cow manure, paunch manure, aged poultry manure, animal blood, and pepper canning wastes in varying amounts were all successfully composted. Because production of an acceptable grade of compost was delayed, insufficient data was available to assess the agricultural value of the compost produced.
