Abstract
The immune system is a target of toxic insult following subchronic or chronic exposure to environmental chemicals, therapeutic drugs or abused drugs. Interaction of xenobiotics with the immune system may result in undesirable effects of three principal types: (1) those manifested as immunosuppression, (2) those manifested as autoimmunity, and (3) those manifested as an allergic reaction. Additional qualitative and quantitative information should improve the accuracy with which the effects of chemicals and drugs on the immune system can be predicted. To extend and develop the approach the authors have focused on in vitro systems. In vitro animal systems are potent tools to permit identification of a chemical's effect on isolated parts of the immune system and results may be correlated with human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The present study evaluated the in vitro effects of a panel of selected drugs on the immune system to compare and validate the assays employed and to determine the sensitivity of the methods used.
