Abstract
The Chlor-Alkali plant at Montague, Michigan began operation in 1954. Between 1956 and 1977 hexachlorocyclopentadiene was produced in addition to hydrochloric acid, chlorine and caustic soda which are still produced. Numerous questions have arisen about the health of working with various chemicals and of living in the vicinity of chemical plants. The products of the Montague plant and particularly hexachlorocyclopentadiene (C-56) and various other chlorinated hydrocarbons produced as unwanted waste materials in the C-56 operation have been among those chemicals about which questions have been raised. A study of the experience of the work force at the Montague plant was initiated in order to help answer those questions.
