Abstract
A report is presented which, as an update of an earlier review, focuses upon information essential to the understanding of the toxic action of cadmium and the relationship between exposure and effects on human beings and animals. The various chapters review information about the following aspects of cadmium: (1) analytical methods of measuring cadmium; (2) occurrence, possible routes of exposure and daily intake; (3) metabolism, including the following: uptake and absorption, transport, distribution and excretion of cadmium in animals, and in normal and exposed human beings; (4) relationships among concentrations of cadmium in blood, urine and organs, Metallothionein; (5) effects and dose-response relationships on bone, and liver, renal effects; (6) epidemiological investigations in cadmium-polluted areas of Japan discusses methodology and cadmium exposure and medical effects in individual areas; (7) the cause of the Itai-Itai disease.
