Abstract
The report is one in a series that SRI International is providing on a quick-response basis for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Populations-at-risk to selected pollutants are being quantified for input to other, more inclusive studies. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the environmental exposure of the U.S. population to atmospheric benzene emissions from specific sources. In this estimate it was assumed that individuals residing in the vicinity of benzene sources spend 24 hours of each day in the same location. To estimate more representative exposures, a second objective was added--to make rough estimates of individuals' total exposures by defining total exposure as the sum of exposures to all benzene sources, including those in nonresidential areas, within a designated period.
