Abstract
This document reports on a waste audit study which analyzed hazardous waste generation and management at three general medical and surgical hospitals in California. The study identified typical hospital waste streams and quantities along with their hazardous properties. The study presented improved methods for waste reduction or recycling and generalized the results to apply throughout the industry. The study also developed a checklist for hospitals to conduct self-audits, so that they can compare recommended waste management strategies with currently employed practices. The conclusions identify certain illegal waste disposal practices, including handling hazardous waste as infectious waste and discharging flammable solvents to the sewer. Recommendations include proper segregation and collection of wastes, greater administrative controls, and engineering improvements.
