The objectives of the study were to evaluate analytical techniques for the characterization of swine wastes and to study methods for the treatment and disposal of animal waste. The influence of feed antibiotics chlorotetracycline, copper and zinc concentrations and sample dilution upon the standard five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) analysis was investigated for swine feces, lagoon influent and lagoon effluent. Work was conducted to correlate BOD5 results with other chemical or instrumental tests and develop technically sound methods for evaluating the oxygen demand or pollutional potential of animal waste. Also discussed are the use of anaerobic lagoons and irrigation using their effluent.
