Abstract
This response action addreses contaminated groundwater in the overburden aquifer beneath the Avoc Lycoming facility property. At the Avco Lycoming Site, the contaminated groundwater presents a principal threat to human health through the ingestion pathway. EPA therefore plans to mitigate this potential threat by remediating the contaminated groundwater in place without extraction. The selected remedy includes: Installation of a molasses injection system in the western portion of the facility property to address groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium; Installation of an air sparging/soil vacuum extraction system in the central and eastern portions of the facility property to address shallow groundwater contaminated with organics. The system will include a series of air sparing and SVE wells, air compressors, blowers and associated piping and vapor-phase carbon for off-gas treatment.
