Abstract
The storage of carbon in soils is a very complex phenomenon. Although it is not fully characterized or understood, steps can be taken to use soils as a reservoir of carbon. The role of soils in the carbon cycle must be more fully understood to develop strategies to mitigate increases in atmospheric biosphere. Likewise, the effects of specific management practices on soil carbon cycling and storage must be more fully understood. The gaps in our knowledge of soils and ecosystems, and their response to climatic change, necessitate additional research before quantifiable projections of the role of soils in global climatic change can be made.
