Abstract
Because of public and congressional concern over the purity and safety of drinking water, GAO reviewed state and federal programs designed to make sure that the public is being provided with drinking water of acceptable quality. The information on which this report is based was obtained in Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia; at the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington, D.C.; and at recreation sites owned by the Corps of Engineers, Forest Service, and National Park Service in the Northwest.
