Abstract
An epidemiology study which included environmental samples and clinical specimens within a three mile radius of a new sewage treatment plant near Chicago, Illinois was carried out. Evaluations were made before and after plant start-up to determine if operations resulted in any adverse health effect to neighborhood populations. Although aerosols from the aeration basins contained microorganisms, densities of these organisms in neighboring residential area were at background levels. Antibody titers and attempted isolations of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites yielded no evidence of significant public health effects resulting from plant operations.
