| Abstract | This Decision Document presents the selected remedial action for the Central Landfill Superfund Site in Johnston, Rhode Island. In summary, the selected source control remedy consists of: Constructing a multi-layer RCRA C cap over the existing 121 acre Phase I area and incorporating the existing 32 acres of RIDEM approved cap on the side slopes; Hydraulic containment and treatment of groundwater in the hot spot area of the landfill and discharging the treated groundwater to either on-site surface water or the Cranston Waste Water Treatment Plant; Implementing deed restrictions on groundwater use and land development within property owned by the RISWMC; Initiating a long-term program of sampling and analysis of groundwater, surface water and air; Conducting a detailed evaluation of the existing landfill gas collection and combustion system; and Installing a chain link fence to prevent access. |
