The Byron Barrel and Drum site is in Genesee County, New York, and occupies approximately two acres of an eight-acre tract of land. The rural area surrounding the site includes woods, wetlands and agricultural land, with approximately 320 people living within a one-mile radius of the site. From 1978 to 1980 the site owner reportedly abandoned approximately 200 barrels of hazardous waste without a permit. The State and EPA discovered these barrels in 1982 and initiated an investigation which resulted in the removal and disposal of the drums and approximately 40 cubic yards of contaminated soil and debris. A subsequent remedial investigation in 1987 revealed that solvent spills have contaminated two major areas of the site, resulting in soil and ground water contamination. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water are VOCs including benzene, PCE, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including PAHs, and phenols; and metals including chromium and lead. |
