Abstract | The focus is on five abandoned mines/tunnels proximal to the cities of Idaho Springs, Black Hawk and Central City and the influence of acid mine drainage from those tunnels on adjacent stream courses. Surface water contamination results from acid mine drainage emanating from the five tunnels and from seepage of ground water through tailings piles both proximal to these tunnels and along stream courses. Approximately 1,200 lbs per day of dissolved and suspended metals are discharged to the Clear Creek drainage from the five mine tunnels. These dissolved and suspended metal loadings have resulted in a significant depletion of aquatic life and have potential impact to sediments and downstream users of surface and ground water. There are ten contaminants of concern including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, manganese, nickel, silver and zinc. Interim remedies are described. |
