Abstract
The California Gulch Superfund Site is located in the Leadville, Colorado mining district in Lake County approximately 100 miles southwest of Denver. This Record of Decision selects the remedial action for source remediation at Operable Unit 2 of the Site. Operate Unit 2 includes the Malta Gulch Tailings Impoundments, including Leadville Corporation Mill; the Malta Tailings, including the Leadville Silver & Gold Mill facility; and the fluvial tailings in the area known at the Lower Malta Gulch. Four (4) removal/response actions were performed at OU 2. In chronological order, the fluvial tailings were excavated from Lower Malta Gulch and deposited in the Malta Gulch Tailings Impoundment. No further response actions are necessary for the Malta Gulch Tailings Impoundment and Malta Tailings Impoundment portions of OU 2, as long as the present zoning, industrial mining, or similar zoning that does not allow residential use is maintained.
