Abstract
The paper discusses the decision making process which resulted in the selection and configuration of the hardware and software for the Air Toxics Control Laboratory (ATCL) designed and built at EPA's Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory, in response to the need for the evaluation of volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants from commercial and industrial operations. The ATCL was designed to allow the investigation of a wide variety of control technologies. The equipment needed to perform these investigations varies widely. The first technology selected to be tested was adsorption using activated carbon. This technology directed most of the design decisions. A description of the automated facility and its operation is included.
