Abstract
Benzene acts primarily as a central nervous system depressant although it has also been shown to cause hematopoietic dysfunction and myelotoxicity in humans and animals. Production of benzene in the U.S. can utilize both coal and petroleum; however, the majority of the production is petroleum derived. Exposure of the human population to benzene can ensue not only from production facility emissions, but from usage of the compound, from oil spills, gasoline evaporation, and coke oven emissions. Control technology has been developed which, if utilized, can provide protection to industrial workers.
