Abstract
The presence of organic substances of industrial origin in wastewaters, storm runoff and in surface and groundwaters may not always be an unmitigated evil--but, it is safe to say, it never is good. In 1976, EPA was required to give special emphasis to 129 'priority pollutants' that present probable hazard in the water resource. Of these 129 priority pollutants, 114 are organic. The document is comprised of 14 chapters, each prepared by a specialist. Chapter 1, Fundamental Considerations in the Removal of Organic Substances in Water is in essence an examination of a wide spectrum of physical chemical principles that are being used, are under study, or may in the future be adapted for use in the separation of organic pollutants in waters.
