Abstract |
It is apparent that several commercially available catalysts are suitable for the methanol dehydration reaction forming dimethyl ether. Problems in developing a prototype dehydration reactor suitable for mounting under the hood of an automobile are presented. In particular, the exothermicity of the methanol dehydration reaction can result in a runaway temperature excursion within the reactor. This can lead to the loss of product selectivity by the formation of higher hydrocarbons with the concomitant formation of coke, which can lead to catalyst deactivation. |
