Contents Notes
Chattanooga Creek originates in northwest Georgia and flows north through these communities before emptying into the Tennessee River. The river is grossly polluted with combined sewer overflows and industrial wastes. In June, July, and August 1995, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) conducted a census in the Alton Park and Piney Woods communities (target area) and in the Avondale community of Chattanooga (comparison area) to identify persons eligible for participation in a health study. In September and October 1995, TDH conducted the actual health study. Each participant was interviewed to ascertain the relevance of health conditions and risk factors, gave urine and blood samples for analysis for biomarkers of kidney, liver, and immune/hematological system function, and participated in lung function tests.
