| Abstract |
In 1975, the latest year for which comprehensive statistics are available, there were almost one and a quarter million people potentially exposed to ionizing radiation in their jobs or as students. The Federal radiation protection guidance noe in effect for most occupational exposure was developed by the Federal Radiation Council (FRC) and was promulgated by President Eisenhower on May 18, 1960. Although additional Federal guidance was issued in 1971 for the special case of exposure of underground uranium miners to radon decay products, the basic guidance which governs the exposure of the vast majority of workers has not been reviewed or modified since it was established in 1960. In 1970 the President abolished the FRC and transferred its functions to the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA has developed recommendations for new radiation protection guidance for workers pursuant to this responsibility to advise the President on radiation matters affecting health. This report contains the support for these new recommendations, which would replace the guidance now used by Federal agencies to regulate all occupational exposure to ionizing radiation except the exposure of underground uranium miners to radon decay products. |
