Abstract
The document provides environmental guidelines for the design, servicing, and operation of diesel vehicles. Effective action requires the cooperation of industry and the vehicle owner and operator. The report begins by presenting descriptive statistics and likely trends of diesel vehicles within the transportation sector. Basic principles of diesel engine combustion and energy and fuel use are then described. Guidelines for addressing environmental and health impacts related to diesel vehicles are presented for carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, total particulate matter potential carcinogens, visibility and odor, noise, and other pollutants arising from diesel fuels and additives. The report describes potential control technologies to count the pollutants/problems listed above. The following topics are also discussed: safety advantages of diesels, regulatory aspects, technical development trends, alternative fuels, and institutional and administrative considerations.
