Abstract |
The report discusses three alternative methods of handling solid waste in high-rise multifamily housing: incineration, compaction, and wet pulverization. This interim report presents, in narrative form, the results of the first study period of the three-study-period program. Conclusions and recommendations are yet to be formulated. The report covers: (1) the objectives and scope of the project, (2) the work to be accomplished during each of the study periods, (3) the method of conducting the project, and (4) the test structures used. In addition, the existing conditions at the test structures are assessed, including the quantity and composition of the refuse, the number and age of the tenants, the contribution to air pollution by incinerators, the degree of vermin and insect infestation, the personnel and power requirements, the cost, the effectiveness and limitations, and the acceptance by owners, tenants, and custodians. The tentative data-collection program and refuse-handling equipment to be installed for the second study period are discussed. (Author) |
