Abstract
The report presents national and regional trends in air quality from 1976 through 1985 for total suspended particulate, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and lead. Air pollution trends were also examined for the 5-year period (1981-85) to take advantage of the larger number of sites and the fact that the data from the post-1980 period should be of the highest quality. Both national and regional trends in each of the major pollutants are examined. National air quality trends are also presented for both the National Air Monitoring Sites (NAMS) and other site categories. In addition to ambient air quality, trends are also presented for annual nationwide emissions. These emissions are estimated using the best available engineering calculations; the ambient levels presented are averages of direct measurements. The report also includes a section, Air Quality Levels in Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA's). Its purpose is to provide interested members of the air pollution control community, the private sector and the general public with greatly simplified air pollution information. Air quality statistics are presented for each of the pollutants for all SMSA's with populations exceeding 500,000 for the years 1983, 1984 and 1985.
