Abstract
High-performance gradient microbore LC/MS is demonstrated by use of spray deposition onto a moving belt surface. A simplified nebulizer design is shown to provide convenient operation and high transfer efficiency over a wide range of flow and solvent conditions. It is shown further that the extracolumn variance of the LC/MS system is sufficiently small to allow the use of relatively short 5 micrometers and 7.5 micrometers reversed-phase microbore columns without significant loss in resolution. Relatively high microbore flow rates (about 100 microL/min) are possible for fast analysis and sensitivity. The LC/MS technique is applied to the analysis of phenols in a aqueous coal gasification sample. Detection limits for full scan LC/EI-MS are found to be about 6 ng for some representative phenols.
