Abstract
WED-Corvallis scientists recently completed development of a country-level carbon budget for Brazil, concluding that the country is a net source of from 174-233 Mgc/yr from land-based processes. An outgrowth of the current study is a realization that certain key carbon uptake processes are especially poorly understood. These include uptake by mature tropical moist forest, secondary forest, and managed pastures. Further examination of these processes confirms a high level of uncertainty, but suggests that they could possibly store much more carbon than previously assumed.
