Abstract
The report describes air pollutants emitted during the production of flat glass, SIC No. 3211. It covers raw materials preparation at the plant site, molten glass production in the melting furnace, and the forming of flat glass products. Melting furnace emissions account for over 99% of the total plant emissions; NO(x), SO(x), and particulates are the major (>99%) pollutants. The particulates are alkali sulfates of submicron size. NO(x) has the highest emission factor. Source severity is a measure of the potential environmental effect of air emissions from this industry: it is defined as the ratio of the maximum average ground level concentration compared to the primary ambient air quality standard for criteria pollutants. The largest severity factors are for NO(x) emissions from a 30 m stack (S=1.3) and a 60 m stack (S=0.57). Severities for SO(x) and particulates are in the range 1.0-0.05.
