Abstract
Experiments were conducted with models of single and linked systems multi-purpose reservoirs with stochastic inflows. The objective of the first study was to develop an optimal operating policy for a given time sequence of minimum and maximum reservoir levels. The approach is based on the distribution of the sum of the inflows over successive time periods. The resultant constraint set forms a linear system of equations. Stochastic demands as well as inflows are considered. The model with stochastic inflows was extended to a connected system of reservoirs, considered as linked by a system of pumping canals and normal river reaches. The objective was the optimal operation of the total system subject to certain restrictions on reservoir operations.
