Abstract
This test method describes the detection and enumeration of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in ground, surface, and finished waters by a fluorescent antibody procedure. These pathogenic intestinal protozoa occur in domestic and wild animals as well as in humans. The environment may become contaminated through direct deposit of human and animal feces or through sewage and wastewater discharges to receiving waters. Ingestion of water containing these organisms may cause disease. Results obtained by this method should be interpreted with extreme caution. High turbidity, as well as turbidities less than 1 NTU, can affect the recovery efficiency of this method. Failure to detect organisms of interest and/or a low detection limit does not ensure that the water tested is pathogen-free.
