Abstract
Analytical methods have been developed, for steady-state unconfined flow, for determining the exact location of the free surface in a two-dimensional flow of groundwater between two parallel ditches. The analysis considers flow in a saturated region below the watertable; capillary effects are neglected. The analysis of a two-dimensional flow can be carried over to determine the location of the free surface in a three-dimensional axisymmetric flow toward a well. The solution has been obtained from potential theory by solving Laplace's equation to satisfy an appropriate set of boundary conditions using a modified Gram-Schmidt technique and a simple iterative scheme. The solution is given in the form of a potential function and a stream function. These functions can be used to determine the exact location of the free surface and to draw flownets. Computer programs have been developed to determine the location of the free surface and to draw flownets. Several flownets are presented. (Modified author abstract)
