Abstract
Very large amounts of petroleum and chemical products are shipped in bulk via waterways and by rail, truck and pipeline. The number and quantity of these materials is steadily increasing as industrial needs expand and advances are made in transportation technology. Spills and other accidental discharges of such products can seriously impair water uses proximate or remote from the source of discharge. The purpose of this manual is to provide basic information on the characteristics and the effects of the pollutants and procedures to be followed in the event of a significant release of oil or other hazardous materials to the water environment. This booklet initially covers about 50 petroleum products and chemicals shipped in bulk. (Author Modified Abstract)
