Abstract
Radionuclides from various sources, including facilities that produce, process, and handle nuclear material, are entering the fresh-water environment. The Service's Division of Radiological Health, in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission, has conducted a number of investigations of streams below atomic energy installations. Two such studies, one on the Mohawk River near Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, and the other on the Clinch and Tennessee Rivers near the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are presented in this document. In general, the results show that all segments of the aquatic environment related to these rivers contain measurable quantities of manmade radionuclides. The results of some uptake studies, carried out in a DRH laboratory, are included to supplement the river studies and to aid in interpreting the results obtained in the field. (Author)
