The previous edition (1991) listed 2,428 species, while this sixth edition, which now includes Mexico for the first time, contains listings for 3,700 species (3,694 fishes and six cephalochordates). The volume includes introductions in English, Spanish, and French and appendices that list changes form the 1991 edition, names for hybrid fishes, and references. The English and Spanish common names are given for each species found in Mexico, and the English and French common names, for species found in Quebec. Also for freshwater species, the country of occurrence is given. Material is presented in tables, with entries arranged alphabetically and indexed. The included CD-ROM contains an electronic version of the data.
