Abstract
Chloroform (CAS No. 67-66-3) was evaluated for developmental toxicity in 4 groups of 20 presumed-pregnant Wistar rats exposed by inhalation to nominal concentrations of 0, 30, 100, or 300 ppm for 7 hours/day, on days 7 to 16 of gestation. Dams were sacrificed on gd 21. Maternal effects were limited to concentration-related decreases in feed consumption and body weight gain. Death of all embryonic primordia occurred in 2/20, 3/20, and 8/20 dams in the 30, 100, and 300 ppm groups, respectively. None of the control dams showed 100% mortality of embryos. All remaining treated dams showed 'slightly' stunted fetuses. However, no gross external, visceral, or skeletal anomalies were observed.
