Abstract
To comply with Federal requirements of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 the General Accounting Office undertook an extensive study of water pollution problems and Federal water pollution research, development, pilot, and demonstration (R&D) programs to determine whether Federal R&D programs were producing the results necessary to help clean up the Nation's waterways. It sought answers to the following questions: What has been accomplished. What needs to be done to achieve national water pollution control goals.
