Abstract
The USEPA is charged, through a series of laws and executive orders, with reducing air and water pollution and finding a comprehensive approach to solving other environmental problems associated with toxic and hazardous substances. EPA's Office of Research and Development funds research, development and demonstration efforts in support of EPA's mandate. This is done through research grants, cooperative agreements, and negotiated contracts. Research grants are utilized mainly in support of investigator-initiated, long-range research activities which are subject to a highly competitive, extramural peer-review, and in-house priority process. The long-range agenda commenced in FY 1980 with a research grants activity. The contents of this Summary of Awards includes essentially all such grants issued since the program's inception as the Office of Research Grants and Centers, in the Office of Exploratory Research located in EPA's headquarters, Washington, DC.
