This report presents an analysis of an aircraft ground operation control measure designed to reduce air pollutant emissions. In a demonstration program conducted at the Atlanta Airport, turbine-powered air carrier aircraft taxied on one less engine than normal with the remaining engines at higher thrust settings. Observations made at the airport during the field test are used to estimate the total reduction in engine operating time and the equivalent reduction in emissions. The Argonne Airport Vicinity Air Pollution Model is used to calculate the improvement in air quality resulting from the test program. The model is a Gaussian-plume-type dispersion model that utilizes point, area, and line source formulations to simulate the complex airport system. Comparison is made with air quality data collected both before and during the modified taxi test for model validation.
